This was one of the first large bald cypress trees collected  by Guy when he was very green.  He was experimenting with his technique of developing realistic and natural taper in large cypress trees at the time. Initially his technique was criticized and thought to be ridiculous. However, after several years and many trees later the technique proved favorable and is now used around the world.   On a visit to New Orleans John Naka saw the tree in Guys yard  and asked him to donate it to the North American Bonsai Collection in Washington, D.C (which was named in John's honor.)
Photo below shows Guy and Cris visiting the Bald Cypress that was donated 16 years ago. Whew...time fly's.  But time is on it's side as the Bald Cypress ages gracefully and is most definitely a survivor  with a history of longevity and the potential  to outlive most others.
